Option for additional time for initial build phase
The game host could choose a time limit for the build phase which is separate to the time limit for the remainder of the game.
For example, you could have a fast game (60 seconds per turn) but the initial building phase has a time limit of two or three minutes.
The benefit of this would be that, while fast is usually a great option, it does leave not much time for the initial building phase. This would be a good 'best of both worlds' situation.

I feel I'm a pretty good player (48% win ratio) and yet I don't understand how players opt to play on very fast, when you only have 30 ish seconds to pick your spot. If you’re seriously playing to win (like me) and you’re picking first, certainly you need more than 30 seconds to select your spot, while also accounting for the next 7 placements. The only way to get ample time today, is by choosing standard, and no one wants to play that for

For the first picker, this means that he has to survey the entire map, think up a strategy and choose his first spot (while thinking which spot might remain for the taking by the end of the picking phase) all in less than 60 seconds
Please add the option to prolong the initial picking phase -

its420 MergedI totally agree. Even for Very Fast games the starting time should be much more, it is literally impossible to decide well in 25 seconds.
I believe it should be a standard of 1 minute for Fast and Very Fast, and as much as the turn time for Standard, but host could change -

Jimmy MergedAgreed as well. Normal mode is the proper time for settlement placement at the start, but a touch too long for gameplay when you don't want a game to go 2+ hours long. Fast mode is a great speed and keeps things fun, but especially on the "fun" maps which are bigger, 60 seconds is too little to make a decision.

Ofir Prizat MergedWe play a lot on your platform and we find it that normal speed is too slow for us and that fast speed is too fast. It would be great to be able to have a time slider so each table can set its own pace for the game. I suggest to have 10sec difference for each node on the slider.

Ofir Prizat MergedAgree. I feel this is needed also for Fast games. A 3:1 time ratio makes sense to me, so for example on a Fast game the settlement phase would be 3 minutes for each settlement and 1 minute for a regular round.

Ian MergedI like fast games. But we need the option of 1:00 placement, with 30 second turns once the dice start rolling. Too many wasted games without enough time to strategize. Random maps can be really hard when you place 3rd or 4th, so we need the option to choose enough time to make reasonable placements.

Lawsey MergedParticularly for 5-6 player games, i've had cases where I haven't had time to take in the board and decide where settlements should go at start of game. In that case a bot decides the best spot for my settlement which can be a really poor choice and ruin the game.
I have no issues with v fast timer during gameplay, but a longer time for setup phase would be hugely beneficial. -

easyc MergedI've been playing for awhile and want to get my friends involved and the time limit is constricting the ability to "teach" the game to them. I think that whilst the game is clicked "private", an option to remove the time limit would be beneficial under these particular circumstances.

Aksel MergedI would like the option to have 2 minutes for initial placements (Normal), but then 1 minute or even 30 seconds for actual turns (Fast/Very Fast). Initial placement is the most interesting and strategically complex part of the game, but playing on Normal speed just for a 2 minute setup timer leads to much slower games. On the other hand, playing on Fast or Very Fast leads to smoother games, but 1 minute or 30 seconds aren't enough time for high level strategy in placements.

Matthew W MergedI like the idea of very fast (30 second turns), but sometimes that's just a little bit too quick for the initial set-up / placement turn.
Most of the time I wind up doing fast (1 minute turns) just to make set-up more relaxed; I wish there was a way to 1 min for set-up, and 30 seconds for all remaining in-game turns.
Best case scenario would be an option to have two options for game speed:
(1) Set-up
(2) Remainder of game. -

Settlement MergedI prefer playing my games on fast as I find normal too slow, especially when playing with random players. However, I think that often towards the end of the game, playing on "fast" can be too quick. 30 seconds to propose player trades, do various bank trades and build is just not enough. I know that when you trade or build it adds a small amount of time which is usually enough. However the initial 30 seconds is too slow in my opinion, you often want a few more seconds to decide how you are going

GPShorts MergedThis must have been suggested already, since in my opinion this is the biggest flaw of Colonist right now. I couldn't find it though, so I figured I'd post it myself and worst comes to worse they get merged.
For faster game settings, having 40 seconds to place the robber might make sense, but even in very slow, it still only gives 40 seconds when each turn you are given 3 hours! I usually play in slow and there is a lot of strategy and discussion that I rarely have time for due to this time l -

DustynPlease, I would love to see this addressed. It is my biggest issue with the game right now. The option to customize it would be nice. But, just making the default set up phase 1.5x or 2x the normal turn length would make sense. The initial placement is important and Standard feels like the only way to have enough time. But, then it's too long for turns.
