"Partial" Replay Mode: Such a feature could be useful for tournaments/"important" games, for more social interactions with friends, etc. This wouldn't require to store replays either, or anything like that. Similiar to chess,tcg,pokemon or other turn-based game websites, one could have a history of replay relevant plays/in-game steps(aswell as the map setup, and whatever else may be relevant), which can be copy pasted. A replay function could re-create the game from this information. You'd simply be spectating a scripted game. I wrote "partial" because certain things may be unnecessary to track, such as the cards in the hand of the players you aren't spectating, outside of their amount.

In chess a big part of improving is reviewing games in post. It would be nice to look back on all the moves after a game of colonist is finished

With the turn timers, you won't have time to view the replay. Save for later, or review game, from end of game screen, would be nice.

Saving replays would be something I'd love. Chess grew by looking over games, so did StarCraft. No reason Catan shouldn't benefit :D

Watching a replay in any competitive game is a great way to improve! Seeing what your opponents minds went through, catching your own mistakes or having a friend or coach watch them with you to help you improve. Especially for strategic games like chess, go, etc its good to watch for blunders and where you could have done better. In order to keep from getting too cluttered server side the replays can be downloaded to each individuals computer, allowing people to copy and share replays with ea

Hi,

Would it be possible to add a feature where every game is recorded (maybe for a limited amount of time if there's a storage space issue) so we can go back and study the game and learn from it?

Chess is a good example. Just offer a log of all played moves, rolled dice and trades. You have probably already a format in the database. Make this open and let people download it. If there exists an API to get game logs people will create their own software to replay games, or you can supply them with a upload form for saved game logs to replay old games. This feature would be suberp.

This would be incredibly helpful for content creation and there is a lot of good ideas to pull from the chess and go community. I agree if an API existed to get some verbose log data then the community could (and would, I would) build the visualisation on top of it.

Warzone has a history mode which allows you to review your game. Very useful to understand how one can improve or model another's winning strategy.

Yes please! This would be a great feature to go through past mistakes with pros. Would love the ability to at least export a file containing the steps that happened in the game, it would be nice if we could then also view it within the browser if we say, create a lobby of it.

Definitely love the idea of this feature.
The Game Log itself is a record of all actions that occur - and I've noticed that each game is assigned a short id. I'm suspicious that id is a short hash of the board layout but I could be wrong.

My software engineering brain is thinking - could we:
1. lengthen the map id's into full UUID or CUID. These would be universally unique. You could take this in a couple of directions, too. With a permanently unique id, you could either allow only reviewing a past board layout, or you could allow people to basically "copy" the board layout and replay the exact board again (not sure if there's much value in it, but some might like it).
2. Clickable game log entries. The game log is essentially an "Event Stream". You could make each of those entries clickable to observe the game's state at the time of that event. Just for the mode of reviewing past games.

Love your work - people. Prefer Colonist.io rather than Catan Universe!

Surprised something like this hasn't been added yet. I play Melee on Slippi, which stores every single game that is played in .slp files on the player's computer. Seems like a feature which can be added somewhat easily and paywalled though I would hope for it to be free.
