C+K "Friendly Barbarian" or "Fair Barbarian"

Nothing feels worse on a C+K game when the barbarian reaches the attack phase in an unlikely low amount of rolls, and losing a city because your 4 pip ore tile didn't hit. It is a huge disadvantage starting a game this way, and it can feel unfair. I have two suggestions to mitigate this occurrence, and they both are variants of house rules I've used IRL -- In Colonist they could be the "Friendly Barbarian" or the "Fair Barbarian" optional mode: (Similar to Friendly Robber)

"Friendly Barbarian" - simple: Barbarian has one extra roll required on the first encounter.

"Fair Barbarian" - more complex: If the barbarian reaches the space before the attack space in less than 13 rolls, then the ship option on the event dice is not possible until 12 rolls occur. 13th roll having the ship available is one below the expected outcome, but at roll 13 each player will have had an equal amount of turns.

I like the "Fair Barbarian" option more, but I would use either when hosting a game.
