Mahal MergedI also have deuteranomaly (the most common type of red/green colourblindness). May I help with suggestions for colours please?
2
For a 4 player game, a good list is:
1) Blue
2) Orange (But not a dark shade. Like the fruit colour or a bit lighter is good.)
3) Dark brown
4) White
Please feel free to ask me questions as I've been part of research on colourblindness before. -

Alex BruskiWould it help if there were a white or black player number on the board pieces? Then for those who can't tell the colors apart, they could just go by the numbers on the roads, villages, and cities.

Alex Bruski MergedWhy not add a black or white player number 1-4 on the top center of each road, village, and city. Then, no matter what the colors are, the parts will be able to be identified by player number.

DAEven a small roman numeral/number system attached to the pieces on the board would work? (Green is 1 or I, Blue is 2 or II, Orange is 3 or III, Red is 4 or IV)

Mack MergedAllow more than the original 4 colors for color blind people.

The resources have figures, but the roads, settlements, and cities are hard to distinguish between players. -

AlexInAuburn MergedThere was a big discussion over a bunch of features a month or two back. A lot of stuff got changed to make it better for Color Blind players. I was proposing that each of the Settlements, Cities, and roads include a pattern for the roof and road that is unique for each player. I am not sure if there are still plans to implement further changes. Get it voted to the top of the suggestion list, and I am certain you will get action. Plan out carefully what you ask for. Working is important also.

Cristián ArenasPlease, I need this! Green, red and orange look just too similar to me, it takes time to figure out who's who, and I've accidentally put the robber on myself.

Mr Lack ConesWhile it is really fun to fuck with with our colourblind friend and pick similar colours so he confuses settlements and when there are wheat/sheep trades he can't tell which is which, I think he deserves a break from it.

Paxton Chow MergedI second this feature. I can't tell the cities apart and also can't tell the players apart in the trade screens. Perhaps for the player icons, just give people different unique icons?
One other alternative for partially color blind people like me would be simply let each user select their preferred color palette. -

epixxfishMy friend came up with an idea for his colorblindness to have the name of the player show up while hovering the cursor over a city/settlement/road so that they may differentiate them without relying on the colors. They also wished for the usernames to be shown on the robber popup that happens when stealing for the same reason. We make it work by chatting and telling them who's who but we still run into some problems occasionally because red/orange/brown/green are so similar

Tor MergedThe game is really good, except it's meaningless for even a slightly colour blind player as two of the colours are impossible to tell apart so you're just guessing who is doing what and who you're trading with. When you play with friends you can sort of work around it to at least be able to participate, but if you're playing with the bots it's just impossible. It's a shame that such a good game has stumbled on such a fundamental hurdle.

timisuggest not changing the colors for everyone since the harsh colors can be unpleasant for some people.
i like the idea of adding numbers/letters/roman numerals
i think both that and a color tilt function (or alternate color pallettes) could be display options for each player to choose from. i’m not colorblind but i do think it would be helpful to have numbers/letters for easier scanning. with all the background colors sometimes it’s not instant to tell which player is where -

ShadesOnBroadwayI think we should add a number by each road/settle/city between 1-4 indicating turn order. Best solution IMO.

RoniI like allowing players to choose the colors for others if needed for colorblind. could be an option in display. Or do allow numbers to be displayed. or textures added to colors. Im thinking like in set

AbeI would agree with everyone about adding colorblind support in general, I agree with @roni about letting colors be clientside, that if you want you can change the colors of other players. I can understand how this might undermine the appeal of buying colors which the devs use to support their project, but I think it would be more inclusive to colorblind players. The other option is to allow a color blind option which adds an additional label to each object on the screen (including when robbing as well as board pieces). Like a number or some other unique identifier that doesn't require color recognition.

GuenetteMore colour contrast player-set options.
The gold and orange are too close, as well as the bronze and red. I don't think I've seen the silver colour in play, but it would probably be too close to the white or even black (neither of which are solidly coloured).
I'm not totally sure if there's a simple solution to this issue, but trying to pick 10 high contrast colours is a start, and maybe remove the gradient shading effect on the pieces to help them pop, or superimposing stripes, dots, or other patterns would help for sure. -

BLFor me, I can't enjoy the game as much as I want.
Depending on the colors I can't even see, where to put the robber.
I've got deuteranopia. The shades are too similar to each other, the first option I was searching for if there is a colorblind setting.
Some games are simply adding optional player numbers would be great! -

SophiaA color blind person that I know cannot see that the 8 and 6 are red... it would be better if they were a brighter or more vibrant red or another color entirely like blue or gold.

RauruI’m glad to see a long thread about this, but would be even happier to see some tweaks made! For me personally, the difference between orange and green is almost imperceptible. I often make mistakes with trading not realizing who I’m playing with. On the physical board game, the green is much darker, which helps. Adding texture or unique icons instead of relying on colors is another good option.
-

DaFFMeiSTeRthat would be great! Always in a struggle when there's no black available anymore :D

Bevthe colorblind option could be a screen that only applies to said color blind player, so that others can still show off their custom colors to one another but the colorblind option allows for a personal filter that gives a set color/label for turn order and/or to usernames

JonThe chat box is the worst thing for me to see, though other non colourblind players I've played against have also said it's hard to read some of the text in the chat box. Green and Orange fonts are the hardest to read on the current background. I have to keep highlighting the test in order to read it.
As others have mentioned telling some of the player colours apart can also be tricky. -
22 Jul, '21
ThomasYou can also take a look how this is solved into the game "ticket to ride". They have added small icons on each colour. You could add that to each piece on the board. But maybe make it togable, so people who don't want to see the icons can turn it off.

sotboy6Hey, how about making the robber a different color from the tiles? Maybe pink or something very different. I'm not color blind and, if it's a big map, I have to scroll around to find him on my ore.

AdamLiterally the only thing I care about is the default four colors of players. It feels more than a little bit shady that in order to be relatively guaranteed to be able to choose a color for yourself that does NOT look almost indistinguishable from someone else's player color, is to pay a whopping $10. I was actually prepared to pay a couple bucks just so I didn't have a roughly 50% chance of getting a color that would look identical to a different color that isn't mine, but $10 feels a little bit like theft, given, it's completely *not* for aesthetic purposes.
It would be wonderful if you could just make the free colors not identical to people with very common red-green colorblindness. -
20 Jan, '22
MikeAnything would be greatly appreciated. Having the Red/Green is really tough.
Ideas;
Numbers or names that come up when you click over the colour.
Add different colours for each position for the player to select prior to the games starting. -

AlexI can't tell the difference between two of the colours. I presume orange and green are they?

StefThe fact that this thread stems from 2019, does not give me much hope... Seems to me that this is not that hard to implement, just some new sprites for at least on of the colors. The orange and green are so alike to me (colorblind) that I make mistakes all the time with who to steal from and trade with. Or I spend like a minute of everyones time looking very hard trying to tell them apart. With 8% of all men being colorblind this is not a small problem for many people playing this game..

NigelThis feature would also help when non-color-blind people are playing at night with flux or night shift on

DisgustingThis game is literally non-playable because the orange and the light green look identical to me. Between 5 to 10 percent of males have red-green colorblindness. It's not difficult to choose different colors that don't look so similar. It's a real shame because I really enjoy the board game and was planning on telling my friends who play the board game about this online version, but as far as I'm concerned this game is non-playable.
And I'm reading that paying $10 for other colors is possible. It's like forcing a guy in a wheelchair to pay $10 to use the elevator while everyone who can walk can use the stairs for free. It's really disgusting. After reading this thread I've decided to never play this game online again because I don't want to give the devs a few cents from advertising. If it hasn't been fixed after three years it'll probably never get fixed so I'll spend my time elsewhere. I'm also unsubscribing from the content creators who play this game.
