Tutorial not working

I'd like to play over Christmas with friends who haven't played before. So I'd like to suggest they follow the tutorial. But when I click on tutorial, I get a blank, fixed screen. Down the bottom it says "waiting to start game", I think, though a red computer symbol is covering what I assume is the word "waiting".
